Herzing College Skilled Trades
Construction Craft Worker Training

Learn the proper methods and procedures for prepping construction sites, handling tools and equipment, and maintaining safety. Get fully prepared to enter the industry in just 12 weeks.

What Do Construction Craft Workers Do?

Construction craft workers are multi-skilled tradespeople who prepare, excavate, backfill, and clean up a worksite. They provide essential support during the construction of buildings, bridges, roads, dams, and more.

Typical tasks include:

  • Loading and unloading trucks
  • Moving tools and materials to and from work areas
  • Levelling earth using rakes, shovels, or tampers
  • Digging trenches
  • Assembling scaffolding, forms, and barricades
  • Directing traffic near sites
  • Enforcing site security

Herzing College Construction Craft Worker Program

Our Construction Craft Worker program is designed to get you job-ready fast. You will study construction procedures and learn how to keep yourself and others safe on site.

Career Outlook

Construction craft workers are in steady demand throughout Ontario. The provincial government expects employment in this occupation to grow by up to 15 per cent over the next few years.

Study Topics

Students in our Construction Craft Worker program learn the theory and practical skills they need to be an asset on a job site right from day one.

In this program you will learn how to:

  • Handle equipment and tools safely
  • Move construction materials around sites
  • Install piping
  • Mix mortar and grout
  • Assemble and dismantle scaffolding, ramps, catwalks, formwork, and barricades
  • Spread concrete and asphalt using paving machines as well as shovels and rakes
  • Monitor safety on worksites

Fundamentals of Construction Craft Worker

This unit will discuss the fundamentals of being a construction craft worker. Students will learn about the common tasks, including site preparation and cleanup, setting up and removing equipment, and working on concrete and masonry, steel, wood, and pre-cast erecting projects. They may also be responsible for site security.

Uses and Maintenance of Tools & Equipment

In this unit, students will learn about how to use equipment. Note that in some jurisdictions, special training or certification may be required to operate some of these tools and equipment.

Using Scaffolding

Scaffolding is used as a work platform to access areas at heights. It is important for construction craft workers to be competent in its use to perform many of their tasks safely.

Concrete

In this module, students will learn about installing shoring for formwork, installing components in concrete, transporting concrete on site, installing concrete joints, etc.

Piping

In this module, students will learn how construction craft workers work with a wide variety of pipe, components, and application techniques when installing utility piping.

Installation of Paving Materials

This module covers how construction craft workers work with paving machines to spread concrete and asphalt. They manually spread, shovel, and rake asphalt where machines cannot operate.

Ground Work

Ground work is done on industrial, commercial, residential, institutional, and civil sites. Students will learn about excavation, backfilling, compaction, etc.

Masonry Work

In this unit, students will learn about tasks like setting up masonry materials, transporting materials to and around the site, organizing the materials, and mixing mortar and grout.

Safety Watches

Safety watches are done by construction craft workers when co-workers are working in conditions that require monitoring.

What you need to get started.

  • Minimum of a Canadian high school grade 12 or equivalent, or a mature student
  • Pass an entrance test administered by Herzing College
  • Be interviewed in detail regarding interest in the field
  • Meet any additional program specific entrance requirements
