Herzing’s Business Administration program focuses on practical office skills and real work experience. You will learn the computer, accounting, management, marketing, and communication skills needed to secure employment in any office environment.

During the internship, you will apply and expand those skills in a professional setting.

Office Applications

This course presents the practical application of the concepts and features of Word processing and Presentation software. Topics include formatting text and documents, creating and formatting tables, working with graphics, integrating information with other programs, managing styles and templates, working with columns, merging documents, creating and modifying presentations; applying formatting techniques; working with charts, objects, and graphics; managing templates; automating slide shows; sharing presentations with programs; working with interactive slide shows; and using the Web for presentations.

Spreadsheets

This course presents the practical application of the concepts and features of a spreadsheet package. Topics include using and managing worksheets and workbooks; applying formatting and style features; working with data, formulas, and functions; managing charts and graphics; working with outlines, views, and reports; automating tasks with the macro feature; using auditing tools, collaborative tools, and hyperlinks; and integrating with other programs.

Business Math

This course provides instruction in the mathematical operations associated with the retail, banking, and accounting industries. Topics include decimals, fractions, and percentages; bank reconciliation; trade and cash discount; simple interest and simple discount; markup and markdown. Mathematical skills are essential for employees of most businesses. This course offers the student the opportunity to study mathematics with business applications in preparation for positions where these applications can be applied.

Accounting Fundamentals

This is an introductory course in manual accounting concepts and procedures. Keeping accurate records of the financial transactions of a company is essential for the preparation of financial reports. This introductory accounting course provides the practical application of the concepts and principles of the accounting cycle for service and merchandising businesses. Students will learn and apply analyzing and recording transactions; beginning the accounting cycle by journalizing, posting, and working with the trial balance; using worksheets, financial statements, and adjusting entries; completing the accounting cycle with adjusting, closing, and post-closing trial balance.

Business Communications

Communicating effectively in a variety of organizational contexts requires recognizing important differences between personal and professional communication. It is also necessary to recognize and accommodate the unique characteristics of each organization. The entire world of work is changing dramatically. Many of the changes revolve around processing and communicating information. As a result, the most successful players in this new world of work will be those with highly developed communication skills. The goal of this course is to teach basic business communication skills.

Organizational Behaviour

Organizational behavior will study both group and individual behaviors within the organization. They will examine communication, leadership traits, perceptions and distortions and will also look at leadership and conflict management approaches. Topics include motivational theory, personality, values and attitudes and organizational change.

Project Management

The course is divided into a series of major topic areas relating to different elements of project management. After developing a sense of the strategic overview of project management, we will begin analyzing various components of project management such as project selection, planning, organizing, and project control. The goal is to shape the course to approximate the elements of project management and the challenges faced chronologically; that is, first considering how to plan the project and then how to more effectively run the project. The remainder of the course concentrates on making use of the theories by developing analytical and interpersonal skills in the students that will be useful to them as project managers.

Marketing and Sales

Marketing is an organizational function and set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its employees, customers, investors, and society as a whole. The key ingredient for creating value is providing consumers with benefits that meet their needs and wants. We will explore specific strategies that support this effort, including analyzing the environment, conducting effective marketing

Database Applications

This course presents the practical application of the concepts and features of maintaining a database using the design and update features of Access, sharing data among applications, reports, forms, and combo boxes, pivot tables, and pivot charts.

Human Resource Fundamentals

The goal of this course is to help you to better understand how to leverage HRM to enhance your personal career success. Understanding how HRM policies and practices work can help you better identify a job and organization you will enjoy working in, increase the chances of getting the job you want, and help you to be a more successful manager once you are there.

Entrepreneurship

This course is designed to give students a broad familiarity with Entrepreneurship concepts and to put existing business concepts in a Small Business context. It will focus on self-employment issues, the various methods of achieving business ownership and the business plan. The goal of the course is to give students an understanding of the considerations involved in deciding to enter independent business and the steps involved in starting or buying a business venture. At the same time, students will be given the opportunity to develop their skills in problem solving, decision-making and planning.

Career Development

This course deals with the development of the student’s career path including internship preparedness and employment acquisition skills. Students prepare to conduct a successful campaign to secure employment through the selection process and to be successful in their career. Topics covered include resume formats, cover and thank you letter preparation, as well as the development of proper skills for job interviews.

Internship

The internship component of the program is the practical application of a students’ knowledge and skills in an industry environment. The industry shall be directly related to the students’ program of study. The internship requires full attendance working in the industry setting. The duration of the internship is five weeks, during which the student must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 100 hours of work experience.

Ayo Adetoro has been part of the Herzing College Toronto campus team for over 15 years. He has offered his knowledge and support to several of our programs, including Accounting and Payroll Administration, Business Administration, and Medical Office Administrator.

What you need to get started.

  • Minimum of a Canadian high school grade 12 or equivalent (Ontario high school diploma or equivalent) or a mature student (19 years of age or older and has been removed from full-time high school for minimum 2 years)
    *Students applying as mature students must demonstrate appropriate levels of math, English literacy, comprehension and/or written skills to warrant success and completion of program
  • Pass an entrance test administered by Herzing College
  • Be interviewed in detail regarding interest in the field
  • Note: admission to some programs may include additional requirements
