This program leads to an Attestation of Collegial Studies (ACS) recognized by the Minister of Education and Higher Education of Quebec.

Herzing College Business Administration – Accounting and Payroll Program

The Business Administration—Accounting and Payroll program covers accounting and payroll procedures, communication, people and project management, and office software.

In this program, you will learn how to:

  • Prepare and analyze financial statements
  • Create and manage spreadsheets and charts with Microsoft Excel
  • Use standard accounting software
  • Write effective letters, reports, and presentations
  • Manage projects
  • Recruit, review, and retain staff
  • Perform basic business math for preparing budgets, calculating interest, etc.
  • Start and run a business
  • Process payroll

Accounting Fundamentals

This introductory basic accounting course presents the accounting cycle beginning with journalizing transactions and ending with the production of financial statements. Topics include accounting concepts and practices, recording transactions, adjusting accounts, preparation of worksheets and the closing process, and preparation of financial statements for service and merchandising businesses.

Accounting II

This course is the continued application of accounting principles and practices as related to corporations and partnerships as well as the analysis of financial statements. Topics include capital assets, current and long-term liabilities, partnership accounting, organization and operation of corporations, reporting income and retained earnings, earnings per share, installment notes payable and bonds, statement of changes in financial position, and analyzing financial statements.

Human Resource Management

This course focuses on the role of management in the staffing and development of human resources. Topics include planning, organizing, and staffing issues; how to develop and direct staff; and controlling human resources in businesses.

Spreadsheets

This course provides the opportunity to study the operation and application of Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet package. Topics include building a spreadsheet, creating formulas, using functions, creating charts, maps, and graphics, lists and data management, worksheet and workbook management, creating and printing reports.

Computerized Accounting I

This course is designed to provide in-depth understanding of Sage 50, an integrated computerized accounting package, including payroll. Topics include the general ledger, accounts receivable transactions, accounts payable transactions, setting up company files, payroll transactions, inventory management, end-of-period processing, and generating financial statements and accounting reports.

Computerized Accounting II

This course is designed to provide practical application of accounting principles using another accounting package, Quick Books. Topics include systems basics and file setup, general ledger setup, invoicing and purchasing transactions, accounts payable and receivable, cash receipts and disbursements, job costing and reporting, payroll setup and processing and working with budgets, business analysis and business simulations.

Office Applications

This course covers the use of the Microsoft Office applications Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. Topics include creating documents, editing text, creating tables, importing images, creating large documents, managing document sections, creating slideshows, managing themes, and using Outlook for email, calendars, and tasks.

Business Communications

This course develops a student’s written communication skills. Emphasis is placed on the principles of effective verbal and written communication as well as presentation skills, which includes understanding the communication process and grammar fundamentals, writing various types of memos, letters, reports, as well as editing and proof-reading. The Internet is used as an information resource and a communication medium.

Organizational Behaviour

This course introduces an overview of organizational behaviour within the context of staff management examining theories of motivation, leadership, and ethics. Topics include personality traits, diversity in the workplace, Maslow’s Hierarchy, Needs Theory, types of leadership, organizational structures, organizational change, corporate culture, and conflict resolution.

Project Management

This course introduces an overview of managing projects including timelines, resources, risk, and cost. Topics include the project life cycle, stakeholder involvement, Responsibility Assignment Matrices, Work Breakdown Structures, risk mitigation and monitoring, cost estimation, critical path analysis, project evaluation, and closeout.

Human Resources

This course introduces an overview of the management of human resources, recruitment, job analysis, and training. Topics include compliance with federal and provincial legislation, accommodations, health and safety, collective agreements, forecasting staffing needs, conducting interviews, employee testing, human rights, developing onboarding techniques, conducting performance reviews, and employee documentation.

Business Math

This course provides a basis of mathematics and arithmetic skills for students entering a business program to help prepare for accounting and other math related functions. Topics include working with decimal values, fraction calculations, cross-multiplication, proportions, percentage calculations, simple and compound interest, and preparing a personal budget.

Entrepreneurship

This course introduces an overview of starting and running an independent business. Topics include forms of business ownership, partnership agreements, business plans, market research techniques, dealing with competition, choosing a location, insurance needs, basics of marketing, pricing structures, distribution strategies, managing space, managing people, government regulations, startup financing, acquisitions, and franchising.

Payroll Compliance Practitioner

This course begins with introducing the functions, objectives, and responsibilities of the payroll department. It then guides the student through the complete payroll process. The calculations of deductions and benefits are detailed. Topics include payroll processing methods, hours of work, leaves, terminations, payroll deductions, taxable benefits, pension plans, EI premiums, income tax, calculating net pay and records of employment. Further topics include sales and service tax, payroll accounting, payroll government remittances, year-end processes, Workers’ Compensation, company benefit plan administration and auxiliary programs.

Internship

The internship component of the program is the practical application of a student’s knowledge and skills in an industry environment. The industry shall be directly related to the student’s program of study. The internship requires full-time day attendance working in the industry setting.

Student Success Skills

This seminar provides an opportunity for the student to apply the techniques and processes for developing a career path and to learn lifetime career management tools and skills. Topics include career-planning, job searching, writing resumes and cover letters, refining interview skills, and preparing for a new position.
