Herzing College Accounting and Payroll Administration courses teach the practical skills you need to get hired. Get hands-on training in Canadian accounting software, bookkeeping principles, managerial accounting, payroll processing, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access.

Office Applications

This course covers the use of the Microsoft Office applications Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. Topics include creating documents, editing text, creating tables, importing images, creating large documents, managing document sections, creating slideshows, managing themes, and using Outlook for email, calendars and tasks.

Database Applications

This course provides the study of the elements and principles of a database management system using Microsoft Access. Topics include entering and editing data, queries and filters, creating and customizing forms, creating and printing reports, and customizing fields and tables.

Accounting Fundamentals

This introductory accounting course provides the practical application of the concepts and principles of the accounting cycle for service and merchandising businesses. Topics include an overview of accounting concepts and procedures; analyzing and recording transactions; beginning the accounting cycle by journalizing, posting, and working with the trial balance; using worksheets, financial statements, and adjusting entries.

Accounting Software

This introductory basic accounting course presents the accounting cycle beginning with journalizing transactions and ending with the production of financial statements. Topics include accounting concepts and practices, recording transactions, adjusting accounts, preparation of worksheets and the closing process, and preparation of financial statements for service and merchandising businesses.

Accounting II

This course is the continued application of accounting principles and practices as related to corporations and partnerships as well as the analysis of financial statements. Topics include capital assets, current and long-term liabilities, partnership accounting, organization and operation of corporations, reporting income and retained earnings, earnings per share, installment notes payable and bonds, statement of changes in financial position, and analyzing financial statements.

Computerized Accounting I

This course is designed to provide in-depth understanding of Sage 50, an integrated computerized accounting package, including payroll. Topics include the general ledger, accounts receivable transactions, accounts payable transactions, setting up company files, payroll transactions, inventory management, end-of-period processing, and generating financial statements and accounting reports.

Computerized Accounting II

The preparation and delivery of presentations and the development of effective communication skills that increase self- confidence will be the focus of this course. The development of group skills will be practiced and much of the time will be spent working in groups. This course also studies of the principles and features of a presentation graphics package, Microsoft® PowerPoint.

Business Math

This course provides a basis of mathematics and arithmetic skills for students entering a business program to help prepare for accounting and other math related functions. Topics include working with decimal values, fraction calculations, cross-multiplication, proportions, percentage calculations, simple and compound interest, and preparing a personal budget.

Spreadsheets

This course provides the opportunity to study the operation and application of Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet package. Topics include building a spreadsheet, creating formulas, using functions, creating charts, maps, and graphics, lists and data management, worksheet and workbook management, creating and printing reports.

Payroll Compliance Legislation

Students who complete the course will know the payroll compliance responsibilities that affect organizations, be able to comprehend legislation, and be able to effectively communicate these to all stakeholders. This course will provide students with the payroll-related legislation affecting organizations, as well as the tools to find information and apply that information to different scenarios in relation to individual pay.

Career Development

This seminar provides an opportunity for the student to apply the techniques and processes for developing a career path and to learn lifetime career management tools and skills. Topics include career-planning, job searching, writing resumes and cover letters, refining interview skills, and preparing for a new position.

Internship

The internship component of the program is the practical application of a student’s knowledge and skills in an industry environment. The industry shall be directly related to the student’s program of study. The internship requires full-time day attendance working in the industry setting. 100 Hours

What you need to get started.

  • Minimum of a Canadian high school grade 12 or equivalent (Ontario high school diploma or equivalent) or a mature student (19 years of age or older and has been removed from full-time high school for minimum 2 years)
    *Students applying as mature students must demonstrate appropriate levels of math, English literacy, comprehension and/or written skills to warrant success and completion of program
  • Pass an entrance test administered by Herzing College
  • Be interviewed in detail regarding interest in the field
  • Note: admission to some programs may include additional requirements
